Self-care, a bit of a buzz word at the moment and can mean so different things to different people.
It’s so easy in this day and age to get caught up with all the crap life throws at us. There’s no wonder we sometimes feel run down and burnt out because we’ve been doing it all, working all hours, attending every event we get invited to, running around after the kids and their activities.
I went to a networking event a little while ago and one of the speakers spoke about “protecting the asset” (the asset being you). If you don’t protect and look after yourself you’ll be no good to anybody. So taking some time out to take care of yourself is not selfish, or a waste of time, it’s important to do this for you and for those you care about.
If you feel refreshed and inspired you will be at your best! You will be in the present at work, or when you’re spending time with your kids instead of worrying about the future, or feeling stressed.
Self-care can be something as simple as getting up half an hour early before everyone else in your household, making a nice cup of tea and reading your book for an hour, it can be meditation, or spending time with an inspiring friend. It can be talking to a therapist or coach, going for a run or walk to clear your head. Whatever feels right for you.
I know there is lots of talk at the minute about self-care not being a “bubble bath” and a “pamper” but if that’s what brings you joy and makes you feel good about yourself then DO IT. Nobody else can tell you what your self-care practice should look like. Nobody.
For me self-care is about doing things that bring me joy and help my busy mind feel centred.
A few weeks ago I had a moment where I had so many ideas, thoughts and things to do going on in my head I just didn’t know where to start, it was quite overwhelming. I was feeling run down and stressed. I spoke to my friend and business coach Claudia, her advice “do a brain dump”, get a piece of paper and write down everything in your head you need to do. Then circle three things you can do in under 20 minutes and do them. After that schedule time in your diary to complete the other things.
Once I’d written all those things onto a piece of paper and completed my small tasks I felt lighter, all the ideas and thoughts were out of my head on that piece of paper and I’d completed three tasks! That to me was a moment of self-care.

- Go outdoors for a walk or run
- Write in my journal
- Have a bubble bath
- Listen to relaxing music
- Sit in the quiet with a cup of tea
- Speak with my counsellor
- Listen to an inspiring podcast
