Meet the Local: Charli Parkin

Charli and I had spoken quite a bit over social media and I have come to know here as a real advocate for North East Lincs. Her instagram page is open and honest, a real representation of our beautiful area.

I finally met Charli in “real life” and she is very much the lovely and friendly person you get to see online. Hopefully we’ll have many more coffees to come!

Tell me a little bit about yourself?
Oooh, I feel like it’s a dating profile. Where to start? Hello there, I’m Charli. I’m a twenty something living in Cleethorpes. I like to think I try to be a positive Polly, and find the silver lining. I like to talk a lot. My Mum always says I have “talk to me on the bus eyes” because I’ll find myself deep in conversations anywhere and everywhere. I like days full of fun adventures but I equally like home comforts, a nice home cooked meal and a Netflix binge.

Have you always lived in North East Lincolnshire?
Pretty much. I spent my Uni years in Liverpool and a few months working in London. It’s been joked before that I’m a stick of rock, if you broke me in half it’d say North East Lincs in the middle of me. I love it here!

What is your favourite thing to do in the area?
Walking. Just getting out there and seeing all the amazing natural sights we have. Beach, parks, the wolds….

Where are your favourite places to shop?
I love Arttopia. I get so many of my Christmas and birthday gifts from there. Loads of creative, independent shops under one roof.

CleeGlass is beaut for jewellery, and they’re also sustainable and look after the environment. Mega important.

Clothes from Forw4rd are always good.

Home bits from Abode, always really helpful and some fab homely pieces.

Where is your favourite place to eat?
Pizza – Tredici
Indian – Agrah
Burger – The Goodburger – (doing pop ups around NEL)
Greek – The Greek Shack
Bruch – Riverhead Coffee
Fish & chips – Wybers Chippy

Tell me what a perfect North East Lincs day would look like to you?
It would be waking up, having a cuppa in the garden, taking a walk down the seafront, maybe a paddle (paddleboard with Ebb & Flo), having some sort of avocado breakfast at one of the many brilliant places in Cleethorpes, doing a little shopping, going for a coffee at The Globe coffee shop, seeing family and friends and then heading for some beers at Message in a Bottle.

I shout about Message in a Bottle a lot. It just reminds me of the places my Mum and Dad told me about when I was younger, where everyone chats to everyone. You’re always welcome, and the only way I can describe it, is having drinks at a mates, but with bloody great beers that you might not get elsewhere.

If someone was new to the area what would be the first thing you’d tell them to do / check out?
Take out your headphones. Put your phone in your bag and just go breathe in the seaside. From there you’ll find so much you’ll wanna try that I won’t need to recommend anything…..

If you could change one thing about North East Lincs what would it be?
The media’s representation. I’m just so bored of things like the dreadful Sacha Baron Cohen film…it’s poverty porn. He couldn’t even film it here because it didn’t look as run down as he wanted it to.

The more you tell people negative things, the more they’ll believe it. I’m not saying this area is perfect – what area is? But putting out those little bits of love and compliments into the world, could mean someone makes a small change…or a big change!

Do you have a “go to” place to chill out, relax and unwind?
The beach. All day. Every day. Mindful minutes watching the water and seeing the sun reflect off the waves. I couldn’t feel luckier.

What is the best thing about living in North East Lincs?
The people. There’s such a strong neighbourhood feel. All coming together and saying… know what, there might be some space for us to grow and improve but we’re working hard and bringing new things to the area.

Thank you so much for that Charli, it was lovely to get a glimpse into your life in North East Lincs.
